Army Detachment Kempf was intended to protect the eastern flank of the 4th Panzer Army. The operation was conducted by three German armies, with the 4th Panzer Army attacking from the south. On 5 July 1943 the German command launched Operation Citadel with the aim of enveloping and destroying the Soviet forces in the Kursk salient. The 5th Guards Tank Army of the Soviet Red Army attacked the II SS-Panzer Corps of the German Wehrmacht in one of the largest tank battles in military history. The Battle of Prokhorovka was fought near Prokhorovka, 87 kilometres (54 mi) southeast of Kursk, on the Eastern Front during the Second World War as part of the Battle of Kursk in the Soviet Union. Net loss of 500 to 550 AFVs in the 5th Guards Tank Army destroyed or damaged, with additional losses of some 200 tanks suffered by 10th Tank Corps, 2nd Tank Corps and 2nd Guards Tank Corps.(See casualties and losses section for details) Net loss of 43 AFVs in all three divisions destroyed or damaged and temporarily removed from service.(See Casualties and Losses section for details)
